Getting Started

We must receive your complete application approximately 4 weeks (if less than 4 weeks, please contact your local CCUSA Office) before you wish to start your placement, but you can apply MUCH earlier than this. Space on the program fills fast, and although most programs have monthly arrival dates, it’s always wise to apply as early as you possibly can (this often gives you the best flight options also!)

It is compulsory for you to purchase CCUSA’s travel insurance covering you for the duration of your time volunteering in Africa, which must include work and emergency evacuation. Please make sure you understand how your medical insurance will work in Africa as GVN, You2Africa and CCUSA will be unable to pay for any medical costs in lieu of being refunded by the medical plan. A copy of the insurance plan will be provided for you to review.

Discuss this with your CCUSA Representative but best to hold off until you have been accepted to the program.

Complete the online application form, then print out the complete and return form and send it in to us with two passport photos and your application fee. We will then contact you to arrange your interview (which will be via telephone from one of our friendly staff).

Before You Go

Yes – Please fill in the exact title of the volunteering opportunity you're most interested in. However, bear in mind that some positions are very popular and you may be limiting your chances of being offered a placement. We recommend that you list your top three preferences and allow us to contact you with other vacant positions should your first three choices be full.

We are looking for people who are outgoing, hard working, and who really want to make a difference in Africa. While rewarding and incredible, these programs can put huge emotional and mental strain upon volunteers. You should be positive that you could cope with this before you apply.

Yes, of course you can go with a friend or partner! Please do be prepared, though, that as places are limited, we might not be able to offer you a position in the same placement at the same time.

You will be given a refund per the details in the program agreement.

  • The cost of a visa, if required.
  • Round trip flights to Africa.
  • In the case of Host Family accommodation, volunteers must pay for their own lunch. Breakfast and (cooked) dinner will be provided.
  • In the case of Program’s Volunteer House accommodation in Cape Town, food costs are not included and are the volunteer's responsibility. Other Volunteer Housing for projects outside of Cape Town may only include partial meals.
  • Telephone Calls, toiletries, other excursions and travel, etc.
  • Daily transportation from your accommodation to Volunteer project.
  • Transport from Volunteer Program back to Cape Town International Airport at end of program.

We will try as much as possible to make sure that you live in close proximity to your volunteer project location. If this is not possible, you may be required to travel to and from your project by means of public transport at your own cost. You2Africa can organize a daily shuttle to and from the project, for an additional fee.  Contact your local CCUSA office for current pricing.
