Volunteer in Vietnam

Volunteers can work in an orphanage or teach English at a University.

Orphanage Program

Volunteers have the opportunity to teach and care for orphans in the central region of Vietnam. The children need care and nurturing, as well as education to help them gain a better start in life, particularly learning English. There are also opportunities to teach adults in Language Centers. Based in the central region of Vietnam, volunteers will be surrounded by lush green rice paddies, rich traditional culture, beautiful beaches, and delicious Vietnamese food.

Regardless of which placement you are in, you will fly into Da Nang and have your orientation there.

Our current placement locations are:

Da Nang

Here volunteers will work at two Day Care Centers (home for disabled children), two Baby Orphanages, one social support center and one orphanage for street children. At these placements volunteers will teach English, arts, crafts, songs and sports and at the Baby Orphanages volunteers will clean, feed and play with the children. Volunteers will work with staff to teach English at the orphanage placements as well as work as assistants at local language centers.

Tam Ky Placements

Volunteers in Tam Ky, 70 kilometers south of Da Nang, have the opportunity to work with two community organizations: The Home of Affection, and the Tam Ky Baby Orphanage. Volunteers care for the children at the orphanages as well as teach English, arts & crafts and sports. English teaching within the community is also part of this placement. Volunteers will teach at a local hospital as well as in a small beach village (Tam Thanh).

Tuy Hoa Placements

Tuy Hoa is the capital of Phu Yen province and is 400 km south of Da Nang. Here volunteers will work at the Home of Affection for orphans and street children, a social support center and rehabilitation school for baby orphans and children with disabilities, a college for young adults, a community education center for young children and a high school for needy children.

In the orphanages and support centers there are many children who suffer from mental and physical disabilities. Qualified physiotherapists, occupational therapists, clinical psychologists, behavioral therapists, play therapists, doctors, nurses, pediatricians and people with medical qualifications are highly sought after in the Vietnam program. However it is not essential that you have these qualifications.

Program Dates

  • Volunteers are required to arrive in Da Nang at the beginning of the month in which they are volunteering to participate in the training and orientation program. Volunteers can participate in this program from 2 weeks to 5 months.

Teaching English Program

Volunteers may teach English and other subjects in Duy Tan University, Da Nang University of Foreign Language, and the Dan Nang Architecture University. Volunteers will teach students correct English pronunciation as well as conversational skills.  You are not required to be a qualified Teacher or have any teaching experience.  In Vietnam, if you can speak English you can teach English!

Assistant teachers are sometimes available to help volunteers with class management when required. Volunteers will normally work Monday through Friday. Classes begin at 7:00 a.m. and end at 5:00 p.m. with a midday break from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Program Dates

  • Volunteers can start their placement on the 1st or 15th of the month and can volunteer from 2 weeks to 5 months.
  • Most of the schools are open throughout the year, except during the Tet Holiday (7 to 10 days in February) (and the summer holiday which runs for two weeks between late July and early August.
  • While volunteers will be able to volunteer during these times, we don't recommend one month stays in February, as your teaching time will be reduced.
